Classes & Instruction
Beginning Drama
Drama 1 is an exciting and inclusive course designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of theatrical arts. Open to all students, regardless of experience or grade level, this class provides a welcoming environment for anyone interested in exploring the world of drama. Through a variety of engaging topics such as character creation, improvisation, stage combat, pantomime, blocking, script analysis, and monologue performance, students will build confidence, creativity, and communication skills. Whether you're a seasoned performer or trying theater for the first time, Drama 1 offers something for everyone to enjoy and grow as an artist.
Advanced Drama
Advanced Drama is an immersive and dynamic course designed for students with prior theatrical experience or who have completed Beginning Drama. This class dives deeper into the art of theater, exploring advanced topics such as in-depth character analysis, playwriting, directing, independent scene study, theater history, filmmaking, and non-traditional theater forms. Students will refine their craft through challenging projects, creative collaboration, and hands-on learning. Outside-class performances may be required, offering opportunities to showcase skills and gain real-world theater experience. Advanced Drama is perfect for dedicated students ready to push their artistic boundaries and deepen their understanding of the theatrical arts.
Film Studies
Film 1 is a college-level course that satisfies the dual credit component of graduation, offering students an in-depth exploration of the art of filmmaking. Open to students in grade 10 and above, this class traces the evolution of cinema, from the silent film era to modern-day digital filmmaking. Students will delve into major genres and movements, including German Expressionism, Film Noir, New Hollywood, and more, while examining the historical, cultural, and artistic impact of film. Whether you're a film enthusiast or looking to expand your knowledge of this influential medium, Film 1 provides an engaging and enriching experience.
Advanced Film Studies
Advanced Film Studies is a college-level dual credit course designed for students passionate about delving deeper into the art and craft of filmmaking. Building on the foundation of Film 1, this class explores a variety of styles and elements that define cinema as an artistic medium. Topics include the intricacies of mise en scène, the power of cinematography, the contributions of female filmmakers, the work of great directors from around the world, and the evolution of soundtracks across eras. Prior enrollment in Film 1 or teacher approval is required. Advanced Film Studies challenges students to critically analyze and appreciate the complexities of film, making it an ideal course for dedicated cinephiles and aspiring filmmakers.

Harvey by Mary Chase
Harvey, a Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy by Mary Chase, is the story of a perfect gentleman, Elwood P. Dowd, and his best friend, Harvey -- a pooka, who is a six-foot tall, invisible rabbit. When Elwood begins introducing Harvey around town, his embarrassed sister, Veta Louise, and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, determine to commit Elwood to a sanitarium. A mistake is made, however, and Veta is committed rather than Elwood!

Reed Meschefske
Head of Theater and Film Studies
Mr. Reed has led the SFHS Theater and Film program since 2010. Before becoming an educator, he worked as a professional actor and improvisational comedian. A native of Neenah, WI, Mr. Reed earned his BA in Theater from Columbia College Chicago and his MFA in Classical Acting from The National Theater Conservatory in Denver, CO. He is also a proud board member of The Mockingbird Foundation.
